I use GIMP image editor. How do I edit a backgroung in a layer?

Gimp is a bit like photoshop I guess. but not exactly the himself explaining how to do this ..? I want to get rid of the white background and only people on the street. But when I try to erase the background, is cleared from the street as well. how do I simply Remove the white curtain and leave the street there? thanks x

First open Gimp and put your picture on the left bottom Gimp.Then Click where it says `s file and drop-down box, click Open as layer `s and put the picture of the girl` s in Gimp.Then in yours and the box on the left channel and click the arrow through which say `s layer and from the dropdown menu to go to the layer and click the new layer and make a new layer make sure the new layer is transparent. Then put the clear coat betwen the bottom layer and the layer with the woman `s photo by clicking on the green arrow at the bottom of the box channel layers. Then come back to the arrow on the other side where it says layers and go to where it says `s Merge Down and combine the transparent film and that of Mrs. picture.Then` s go to your toolbox and click the Select by Color of which seem `s like a hand next to the box 3` s. Then go to the box with the picture `s on it and click on the background behind the lady` s who do not want. will a line appear like ants marching `s` s. Then go to your agan Tool Box and click on the eraser tooland make the eraser as big as you can delete the background.Becareful and the lady `s dress because it's allmost the same color as the background. Then come back to the arrow over where it says `s layers and merge the layer with the lady` s with the layer street. PSYou would have to reduce your photo with the lady `s before combining the image of the lady` s the image of the street. If you do here are some tutorial `s that will show you how.
