hi, i got the flash 430Ex but i dont understand manual and dont know what settings to use on regular portraits, im indoor with some light(lamps) but but ny pics wont come up good, what is the zoom on this flash for? im shooting on manual mode on my 40D and when i shot portraits, you know the vertical position, i get a lot of shadows from the model, i thought it was my inbuilt flash was not powerful enough but now i have the canon 430 and shadows are even darker,, kind of sad, yust help me with a few settings on flash, the cam is ok, i keep shuter speed at max 250 and iso 100 aperture 4.5,,, it really is flash problems, help please
You have a nice setup, it will just take a little work to get the results you want.
With a one light, on camera flash, the easiest thing to do is to bounce the light. Your 430EX has the ability to swivel, so when you are shooting a portrait – with the camera vertical – go ahead and swivel the flash head to point to a place on the ceiling halfway between your camera and the model. Stay in ettl mode. When you shoot, the light will hit the ceiling and then light the model from above (this works best with a white ceiling – a colored ceiling will reflect the color of the ceiling).
There are two big advantages with this. First, the light is falling on the model from above, which means the shadows will be behind her, on the floor. The second thing is that the light has better quality – it is diffused, not harsh direct light.
Diffused light allows a more gradual transition between where the subject is lit and the shadows. With harsh lighting – what you are seeing with the flash now – it is bright in one spot and next to that it is dark – no gradually getting dark..
There is a little info here on lighting. If you decide to go off-camera with your 430EX (I use mine off camera quite a bit) there is info on getting a light stand, umbrella, triggers and receivers, too.
