How exactly do battery grips work for DSLRs?
I’m planning to purchase a Battery Grip BG-E5 for my Canon XSi but I don’t exactly know what it does. Does it function as a battery pack or just a compartment that you put batteries in?
It requires that you add batteries in it. It is a reserve battery pack for your camera. It also acts as a larger hand grip, which is good if you have large hands. Generally Canon Grips will hold 2 batteries (like the one in your camera) and will allow another backup installation of several AA batteries. It also allows you to mount the camera to a bipod or tripod. You will notice the female coupling nut on the bottom of the grip. I highly recommend the Battery Grip.
